Angelicka James

Birth Place: Spanish Town, St. Catherine, Jamaica

Early Life: I was raised by my great-grandmother for the first 13 years of my life. At age 15, I left Jamaica for the United States where I attended high school and graduated after 4 years. Next, I enrolled in a 4 year college and obtained a job as a case manager working with families who have children with developmental disabilities. After receiving my Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, I decided to go back to school to complete my Master’s Degree in Psychology, specializing in ABA Therapy. I really enjoy what I do and it gives me hope and joy to know that at the end of my day, I helped at least one family.

Career Life:  In my career, I have overseen, trained, and mentored nine Medicaid Services Coordinators and 350 individuals across all the five boroughs of NYC. I’ve exercised collaborative leadership with the program supervisor, consumers, patients, and external providers to ensure seamless operations and growth of the agency’s programs, ensuring 100% compliance with city, state, and federal regulations and guidelines.

In my current job in ABA Therapy, I facilitate educational and supportive sessions by emphasizing social skills, learning readiness skills, activities of daily living and self-care, as well as tactics for conversation/interpersonal effectiveness, conflict resolution, and distress tolerance. I author detailed progress notes to chart patient progress, objectives, and milestones. I provide one-on-one counseling for clients living with Autism in their homes. I also participate in studies that demonstrate how environmental circumstances impact behaviors which lead to the presentation of techniques for overcoming mental and social challenges. We reinforces positive, learned behaviors with reward systems, incidental teaching, and pivotal response training, employing my formal education in psychology and behavioral analysis. With all of my vast experience I also bring love for my profession, and I look forward to future opportunities to continue to pursue my passion. I now have over 12 years of working experience; I have learned a lot, about children and adults with developmental disabilities. I believe that being a part of this non-for-profit organization, and helping children with developmental disabilities, would be a great opportunity for me. I would like to continue helping families. JWC gives me the opportunity to give back to my country.
